From the Coaches..

Aloha,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Rocky Fraticelli, baseball coordinator for the Kalaheo HS baseball program. I have been involved in the Oahu Interscholastic Association as a varsity head coach in baseball and basketball for over 30 years. I had been a baseball coach at Kailua HS (1981) and Castle HS (2012-2018). In between those years, I coached varsity basketball at Kalaheo HS and Castle HS. I was a member of the Kailua Little League as a board member, coach and player. I also played baseball for the PONY league, American Legion and at Balboa HS in Panama. I attended Chabot JC and graduated from UH-Manoa as a Physical Educator. My 5 brothers and sister are Kalaheo alumnus. I am currently a teacher at Castle HS in the PE department. I look forward to working with your teenager this school year and teaching you the “Game of Life” through baseball. At Kalaheo HS we don’t have tryouts for JV baseball. All students interested in learning the game will have a coaching staff that emphasizes in teaching the skills then coaching the student.

Your teenager will have a Baseball Information handout that also gives important dates coming up during the school year 2023-24. Please look it over and contact me with any questions or concerns you may have about the Kalaheo HS baseball program. Looking forward to have you and your teenager consider being a part of the Kalaheo HS baseball program.

Sincerely,
Rocky Fraticelli, HC Varsity; (808) 294-9058; [email protected]
Andre Fraticelli, HC Junior Varsity; (808) 294-8359; [email protected]

Below is a message from A Baseball Observer
“Here comes an interesting stage of the game in which you will need to decide for yourself on what position(s) you desire to play at and try out for high school. Your knowledge and experience have come from your previous participation in community leagues. You probably played at the position(s) you pretty much excelled at or filled in somewhere else. You were also subject to having played under certain types of coaching staffs, which may have either played to win or played for player development and enjoyment of the game. The question I have here is were you a starter, did you always or most of the time play the entire game, and/or were you the bench player who only played the requirements of a mandatory playing rule or saw very limited action? Were you played and the position you played because of your merit or were you subject to coach’s favoritism? In other words, how good are you?” “What I am leading up to here is that the biggest transition you will face as you are trying out for your high school baseball team is that the emphasis is on performance and winning. Depending upon the player personnel at hand, you will be placed within a very competitive atmosphere and you are subject to the discretion of your high school baseball coaching staff. You may be able to try out for the position(s) you want and/or you may be asked to try out for other possible position(s). The amount of playing time you receive is subject to the coaching staffs’ discretion. You may have been the star player or seen a lot of playing time in the community leagues, but here on the high school level, you are going up against some pretty tough competition, depending upon the talent and class. And don’t forget, there is no mandatory play rule on the high school level as compared to the community leagues. You may have learned, to some degree, the basic fundamentals of the game and some basic mechanics. To be the best of the best, you had better excel at the position(s) you want to play at. If you are not at your desired position(s), you had better study and learn quickly what the other position(s) require and practice diligently so that you can have a chance of playing there. As I mentioned earlier, with high school baseball, the emphasis is on what the athlete can do to improve the team’s chances of winning. Just like the all-star team in the community; it is the challenge to try to qualify for the playoffs; then try to make it to States; then try to bring home the State title to your high school.” “Your varsity head coach has his own philosophy for his baseball program. He is the boss and you will need to adjust your game to his style. Don’t be alarmed and panic, your varsity head coach is fair; you will still be developed within the program. As mentioned earlier, the head coach doesn’t have to play everybody as compared to the community leagues. Therefore, a heed of warning, you had better hustle and project a very positive attitude. You may be able to play at the position(s) you want and/or you may be asked to play at other possible position(s). Nevertheless, your goal is to first make the team; then, if possible, play at the position you excel best; next, play at a position the coach and team needs you; and lastly, play with a positive team spirit, no matter what the outcome. You still have a chance.”
